Washington D.C —Quando exercia o cargo de Presidente da Angolan Community Association of Illinois, na cidade de Chicago, no princípio do ano 2000, convidei a Sra. Júlia Cipriano Machado, na altura Cônsul geral de Angola em Nova Iorque, que trouxe consigo uma equipa diplomática e conseguiu resolver — em menos de três horas — o problema dos bilhetes de identidade e passaportes de muitos angolanos aí residentes.
No entanto, ao fugir à responsabilidade de enviar “postos itinerantes para o registo eleitoral” em centros com maior residência de angolanos nos Estados Unidos, a nossa embaixada em Washington D.C demonstra que não conhece o número de cidadãos nacionais espalhados nesse país ou não tem algum interesse nos direitos cívicos dos eleitores nacionais.

Who among us cares about the rights of national voters?
As President of the Angolan Community Association of Illinois in Chicago in the early 2000s, I invited Mrs. Júlia Cipriano Machado, then Angola’s Consul General in New York, who brought a diplomatic team and solved – in less than three hours – the problem of IDs and passports for many Angolans living in Chicago at the time.
However, in evading its responsibility to send out “itinerant posts for the electoral registration” in cities with the most significant number of Angolans in Washington DC, our embassy shows that it does not know how many nationals live in the United States or cares about their civic rights.
